Volunteerism for positive impact

I would like to again share some of my experiences with volunteerism and how that has helped me as a person.

A lot really goes into making a decision to volunteer. I have met most young people who frown at giving their time or other resources in an attempt to put smiles on the faces of others. Personally, I get excited when I just commit myself towards helping an organisation to meet their goals (mostly NGOs).
Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” “You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.” “Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation's compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain loving one another.”

I remember Dr. David Oyedepo once said "whatever you want to make happen for yourself, make it happen for others first". This world would be much better if we the young ones could be motivated entirely by seeking to assist others achieve their goals instead of chasing almost every avenue for profit.

I am a United Nations Online volunteer and each time I send out applications to help other NGOs registered with UN, I feel happy. But I just become so joyful when I am given the chance to solve a problem with my skill set. Sometimes I deliberately learn a new skill just to be able to solve a problem an NGO maybe facing. I see the act of volunteering as an opportunity to be a better person....every voluntary act towards helping an organisation is a step towards making positive impact and changing lives.

A few weeks ago, an organisation that I do PR work for (voluntary) was organising an event at the University of Ghana to recruit and train new mentors for our mentor-ship program. I was so glad and inspired to see students trooping in to sign up for the opportunity to volunteer. Most folks just passed by; but what's important is that there are lots of young folks out there that just want to make positive impact. And it's exciting to know that most of them are taking the right actions to make positive impact.

So my advice; don't be motivated my money. Rather, seek to be useful to others who may not have had the opportunity to have the skills that you have acquired.

Make every moment count by giving someone a hand.
